Rumour has it
that Bauer Media is considering re-launching The Face, however, they’ve neither
denied or confirmed the suggestion and inevitably it's sparked much
discussion online and in the Media Guardian yesterday. Apparently it
may resurface next year as a free title or online, with talks taking
place with former FHM editor Anthony Noguera. From what I've read, the general
consensus seems to be that it's a pretty pointless venture, "how do
you maintain the cachet if you give it away free?", asks a former
Face staffer, surely the point of The Face was to create something iconic,
stylish and the "benchmark of cool" which is pretty tricky when it's
being handed out with ya copy of the metro. Fair enough, if it's only available
in trendy shops but then it has no budget and loses its "editorial
teeth". Personally I don't see the need to bring it back from the dead; it
was like so many other things a reflection of the zeitgist. With i-D dropping
from a monthly to bi-monthly publication in order to survive, it seems like a
recipe for disaster considering the current climate. Taking it online seems to
defeat purpose of what it set out to be in the first place, I think the
"80's fashion bible" has had it's day.
